For her site-specific work, artist Katrin Mayer often uses archival research and engages with local histories in order to reflect and question the historicity of a place in the present. Invited to exhibit at Kunsthalle Osnabrück, which used to be a monastery built around 1300, she thematized the change of the former cloister to the corridor of today’s Kunsthalle, that is now led by two queer-feminist directors.
Formerly used for procession and praying, it is now an exhibition site and a place for informal encounters and exchanges between staff and visitors. A place that connects and activates the institution. The exposed (internet-) cables under the ceiling also execute and visualize this function on a medial level, especially during the pandemic.
Katrin Mayer created a site-specific, feminist texture, consisting of two "corridors": One on site in Osnabrück and an extending one on the internet.
The work travels back to the Middle Ages and interweaves Christine de Pizan's utopian vision
of a "City of Ladies", Hildegard von Bingen's invented secret language "Lingua Ignota", images of the stonemason Sabina von Steinbach building a church, with many materials of the past and present situation of the institution. One visual track and four audio tracks were created, that associate an alternative, feminist-speculative herstoriography of the cloister.
